Poll violence

Sir, — This refers to the violence in the Bihar elections. It appears that the State has no salvation from the gimmicks of mass rallies and simulated support. The play of caste politics is such that it is made to appear as though the subaltern speaks only through the RJD.

A. Jagadish Chandra,
Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh

Sir, — The violence in the just concluded Assembly elections of Bihar and Jharkhand is a black mark on our democracy. With 57 years of Independence behind us, we are still unable to conduct free and fair elections in some parts of the country. The matter is of grave concern.

Kiran Annapragada,
Atlanta, Georgia
