GDP figures

Sir, — If the Finance Minister claims that the real GDP numbers for the previous and the current fiscal years reflect the good health of the country's economy, he will be theoretically correct. But the claim will make practical sense to ordinary citizens of the country only if the economic growth has been commensurate with the number of jobs for the rural and urban unemployed and underemployed. Such vital outcomes of economic progress do not seem to have been achieved.

K. Vijayakumar,
Bangalore
