HAVERI, FEB. 24. The councillors of Haveri municipality on Thursday withdrew the dharna and plans to call for a bandh on Monday next following the assurance held out by Basavaraj Horatti, Minister for Small Savings and district in-charge. The councillors were protesting against the deliberate disruption in water supply to the town.
Meeting
Mr. Horatti held a meeting and discussed the issue with the councillors, who were led by Rajanna Pugasetty, chairman of the Standing Committee. He urged them to bear with the Government till the elections to gram panchayat were over. He said that he would ensure that the problem of disruption of water supply by the people of Guttal was sorted out by March 2. The Deputy Commissioner, Azeezulla Baig, and the Superintendent of Police, Siddanna, attended the meeting. The councillors initially were not agreeable to call off the agitation.
Written undertaking
They wanted a written undertaking from the Minister. Mr. Horatti said that the Government could not do anything until the elections are over. The villagers of Guttal are reportedly also facing drinking water scarcity. A scheme for bringing water from the Tungabhadra water for them also could not be implemented, as a few farmers managed to divert the water to a nearby tank. The Haveri police have booked cases against 12 villagers for disrupting water supply.
