Chitradurga ready for panchayat polls

CHITRADURGA, FEB. 24. All arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of gram panchayat elections on Friday in Chitradurga district.

As many as 8.38 lakh citizens from the rural areas will elect 3,171 representatives for the 182 gram panchayats. Of the 7,506 candidates in the fray, 2,832 are women.

All members of the Bheemasamudra Gram Panchayat in Chitradurga taluk and Tuppadahalli Gram Panchayat in Holalkere taluk were elected unopposed. As many as 494 candidates were elected unopposed in the district. Of the 1,065 polling stations to be set up in the district, 360 have been identified as "hyper sensitive" and 378 as "sensitive" booths.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer, S.R. Umashankar, said that efforts have been made for the smooth conduct of the polls. Around 7,900 government employees have been drafted for the conduct of elections.

B. Dayanand, Superintendent of Police, said that special squads have been formed to check activity of anti-social elements during the elections. Additional forces from Bangalore, Davanagere, and Bellary consisting of around 950 members have been pressed into service.

Around 30 villages have been identified as sensitive areas and special forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, he said.
