This Day That Age
We deeply regret to record the death of Mr. A. Vaidyanatha Aiyar, veteran Congressman, at a private nursing home in Mylapore, Madras, on February 24. He was 65. He had been suffering from leukemia for the past nine months. Mr. Vaidyanatha Aiyar was one of the foremost constructive workers of the Congress and one of the leaders of the Bar at Madurai. Being an active Congress worker from 1921 onwards, he was in the forefront of the national movement, and courted imprisonment more than three times. He was also for some time debarred from practising in the courts by the then Government. Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, in a statement said, "There was none to equal Mr. Vaidyanatha Aiyar in sensitiveness to injustice or suffering. But for him I am certain Tamil Nad would have been as backward as other parts of India in the matter of the religio-social emancipation of Harijans. If Madras has a great record in that respect it is due to his courage and initiative. We have lost a gem of a soul. Madura is the bright forehead of Tamil Nad and Mr. Vaidyanatha Aiyar was the `Tilakam' on that forehead."
