HUBLI, FEB. 24. The Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Mysore Zone, G.K. Pillai, has alleged that some traders are trying to mislead other businessmen and the people over the implications of the value added tax (VAT). He told presspersons here on Wednesday that after the implementation of VAT, there will be no scope for unaccounted transactions and the system will become more transparent. This has alarmed some traders, who are trying to mislead others. The introduction of VAT is expected to check tax evasion, he said. To a query, he ruled out harassment of traders with respect to service tax. Since it is a new tax, there will be some complaints. But the department has made provisions for traders to register online. "We are simply accepting whatever returns the service provider files," he said. The Mysore zone, which comprises the Mangalore, Belgaum and Mysore commissionerates and has jurisdiction over 21 districts, had shown good progress in revenue collection, Mr. Pillai said and added that it has increased by 30 per cent over that of the previous year.
