PONDICHERRY, FEB. 24. A session in Tamil on `Grammar and Tamil literature' was held today as part of an ongoing international conference on the forms and uses of commentaries of Indian languages. The conference, organised by the French Institute of Pondicherry in collaboration with other institutions was part of the forthcoming celebrations of the Institute's golden jubilee. V. Arasu, Head of the Department of Tamil Literature in the Madras University, spoke on the tradition of commentaries and Tamil intellectual history. He said that Tamil intellectual history could be determined on the basis of commentaries. K. Nachimuthu, Head of the Department of Tamil in the Kerala University who chaired the session, dealt with Tamil connections, their types, principles and practices. R. Vijayalakshmi, a researcher, spoke on the commentaries on `Jaina Buddhist' texts in Tamil, `Seevakachintamani,' the `Nilakesi' and the `Manimekalai.' S. N. Kandaswamy, a Tamil scholar, gave a talk on `an appraisal of Parimelazhagar's commentary on `Paripatal.' Prema Nandakumar, a researcher, spoke on `Moovayirappadi: an experiential commentary on Tiruppavai.' T.N. Ramachandran, the Director of Institute of Saivasiddhanta Research, Dharmapuram, and A. A. Manavalan, from the Madras University, Chennai also spoke.
