Bilkis asked to identify clothes, photographs

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, FEB. 24 . The defence today asked Bilkis Yakub Rasul, prime witness in a post Godhra gangrape-cum-murder case, to identify clothes and chappals recovered from the scene of crime as well as some photographs.

Harshad Ponda, who continued to cross-examine her for over two and half hours, asked her to identify the clothes given to her and the others from her family after they fled from their village.

On February 28, 2002, Bilkis and 16 of her family members fled from Singwad, Randhikpur, her native village, which she was visiting, after a mob set fire to and looted their houses. They reached Khudra village where they stayed in the house of an Adivasi woman and were given clothes to camouflage their identity.

Bilkis was asked to clarify what clothes each family member was wearing and about the clothes given to her by the Adivasi woman.

The defence counsel suggested that Bilkis and her family were not given the clothes as mentioned by her and that she had not produced the clothes before any police officer. Bilkis said she had handed over the clothes to her aunt Sugra at the relief camp at Godhra. When shown photographs of the people killed in the incident, she identified 16 as her relatives.
