NEW DELHI, FEB.24. The Union Cabinet today decided to further extend by three months the tenure of the high-level panel set up to inquire into the Godhra train fire incident in which 58 persons died. This is the second time the tenure of the panel, headed by former Supreme Court Judge, U.C. Banerjee, was being extended. The panel was set up on September 3 and after the first extension given in November end, it was scheduled to submit its report on March 4. It has now been given time till June 4. Speaking to reporters, the Railways Minister, Lalu Prasad, said the tenure was being extended as the committee has to complete its complex investigations and finalise its report. The panel has already submitted an interim report and it would submit its final report before the extended date, he added. The Cabinet also decided to ratify the Rotterdam Convention relating to international trade of certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides. The Convention seeks to facilitate exchange of information about their characteristics among the countries that are parties to it so as to ensure that there was no threat to human health and environment. Chaired by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Cabinet meeting further decided to move official amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill taking into account the recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
