House panel formed

HYDERABAD: The Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, has announced a 28-member Committee on General Purposes in the Assembly on Thursday. They include the Legislative Affairs Minister, K. Rosaiah, the Leader of the Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Government Chief Whip, Panel Chairmen, Chairmen of various committees and floor leaders.

Building workers' demand

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Building Workers' Federation has decided to organise constituency-level symposia every Saturday and Sunday on problems facing 30 lakh construction workers.

R. Kotamraju, president, in a statement issued here on Thursday, demanded a discussion on the problems/demands of the workers in the Assembly. The demands include a comprehensive legislation and welfare boards. The workers needed house sites, white ration cards, old age pension, insurance facility, PF and ESI coverage.

Killed in group clash

Srikakulam: A man, identified as O. Raja Rao (35), was killed and fifteen others injured in a clash between two groups over local issues at Vijayarampuram village in Laveru mandal on Thursday. Raja Rao died on way to hospital.

The injured were admitted to the Government hospital here.

According to the DSP, Sreerama Murthy, who visited the village, a quarrel among women for drinking water at the village borewell on Wednesday night led to the clash. Two constable were posted in the village and the situation was under control, he said.

Plea for remunerative price

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State executive of All-India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha on Thursday demanded a price of Rs. 3,500 for a quintal of chillies and purchase by the Markfed.

G. Divakar, general secretary, in a statement wanted the Government to fix Rs.2,500 as the price for a quintal of cotton to be purchased by the Cotton Corporation of India.

He demanded immediate intervention of the Government in ensuing purchase of the two commodities because of the agitation by farmers in Warangal, Khammam and Guntur markets.

Mr. Divakar stated that if farmers were to get a remunerative price, the rate should be Rs.3,500 for a quintal of chillies.

Dies in fire mishap

ONGOLE: A 35-year-old man was burnt alive when his house caught fire at Yerragondapalem village on Wednesday night.

Pasam Nagaiah was sleeping along with his wife and children in his house when the mishap occurred. While his wife and children ran to safety, Nagaiah was charred to death.

Nagaiah`s father lodged a complaint with the police holding his daughter-in-law responsible for the death of his son.

Case against hospital official

ELURU: The police registered a case under Section 354-A (dereliction of duties causing death) of IPC against the Superintendent of Government Hospital at Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district for allegedly mishandling a case leading to the death of a boy.

According to information, Akkisetti Rama Rao, suffering from high fever, got admitted to a private hospital allegedly run by the Government Hospital Superintendent. When the doctor administered an injection, it reportedly failed to work and the patient died.

The victim's father, Sayikumar, a medical shop owner at Tadepalligudem, lodged a complaint with the police, charging the doctor with negligence causing death of his son.

Sunita's charges termed false

HYDERABAD: Four Congress women MLAs termed false the charges levelled by Paritala Ravi's widow, Sunita, against the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and others.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the legislators - Konda Surekha, Gade Neelavathi, Swarna Sudhakar and Gouru Charita Reddy - said that Sunita was levelling charges against Congress leaders at the behest of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and others.

Ms. Surekha said that the murder of Paritala Ravi was the result of a faction feud and not political as was being made out. The Government was prompt in ordering a CBI probe into the incident without giving scope for any doubts, she said. "Sunita is being made a sacrificial goat by the TDP," she added. Ms. Neelavathi said that the TDP was trying to use Sunita to gain political mileage. Expressing similar views, Ms. Swarna Sudhakar said that the TDP was using widows of its leaders to take on the Congress.

New department created

Hyderabad: A new department named `Infrastructure & Investment Department' has been created for achieving the set goals in these sectors `through a holistic approach'.

A Government Order said that the new department, equipping itself with adequate and state-of-art infrastructure, would create environment for the upcoming projects through single window facility.

Eleven types of posts were sanctioned for the department ranging from Principal Secretary to data entry operator. They would be filled by deputation/transfers from other departments. Where necessary, other staff would be taken on contract basis.

Extra coach for 3 trains

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has added a general second class coach to three passenger trains running between Secunderabad/Kacheguda and Kurnool, Guntur and Dhone for the Manyamkonda Jathra. The coach will be run till March 8. A stop for a minute at Kotakadra station is being provided for the Nandyal-Guntur-Nandyal passenger, a press release issued by the railway said on Thursday.

Dry weather forecast

Hyderabad: Weather in the State remained dry on Thursday. Minimum temperatures rose at one or two places in Coastal Andhra and Telangana and changed little in Rayalaseema. Arogyavaram reported the lowest night temperature for the day at 19 degree Celsius. The forecast for Friday issued by the State Met Office was that the weather would be mainly dry in the State.

EAMCET applications

TIRUPATI: The Regional Coordinator of EAMCET-2005, N.C. Eswar Reddy, has informed that filled-in application forms would be received at the Tirupati regional centre (SVU College of Engineering) on February 26 and 27 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and again between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The last date for receipt of applications (without late fee) is up to 5 p.m. on March 3.

Dharna staged for power

KURNOOL: Residents of Ganesh Nagar-2, N.G. Nagar and Salamkhan Nagar, led by CPI leaders, staged a dharna at the office of the Superintendent of the State Central Power Distribution Company here on Thursday, urging authorities to provide power supply to the colonies.

The CPI city secretary, Jagannatham, said the residents were put to inconvenience in the absence of power.

Employment registration

CUDDAPAH: Unemployed candidates, whose employment exchange registration lapsed between March 1, 2002, and December 31, 2004, could renew it by March 31 this year.

The District Employment Officer, C. Mani, said in a statement that candidates could apply for renewal in person or by registered post by enclosing their lapsed renewal card.

Partially gutted

CUDDAPAH: A mini-lorry carrying fodder was partially gutted when the load came in contact with overhead electric wires on Rampadu road in Porumamilla town on Wednesday night.

Dalits picket Collectorate

CUDDAPAH: Members of several Dalit organisations picketed the Collectorate on Thursday decrying the alleged inaction of officials in evicting those occupying lands belonging to SCs of Pathacuddapah.

The Congress SC/ST Cell Chairman and LIDCAP Director, B. Ayyanna, who led the protest, charged officials with not responding to relay fast undertaken by Dalits on the issue.
