CHENNAI, FEB. 24. The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, was today granted conditional anticipatory bail in the `Tirukottiyur Madhavan assault case' by a sessions court here, which asked him to report before the investigating officer in the case every Tuesday. The Principal Sessions Judge, P. Murugesan, granting anticipatory bail, said the Acharya should be enlarged on bail in the event of arrest or surrender before the Judicial Magistrate-I at Kancheepuram before March 10. He was to execute a bail bond for Rs. 25,000 and furnish two sureties for a like sum each to the satisfaction of the Magistrate, and should report before the investigating officer between 10 a.m. and noon every Tuesday. The Judge also cautioned the Acharya against trying to tamper with evidence and hamper investigation "directly or indirectly." Mr. Murugesan quoted the observations of the Madras High Court while granting anticipatory bail to other co-accused in the case, and said he would follow in the same footsteps to say that the Acharya "had made out a prima facie for grant of anticipatory bail at this stage." He further held that it was only "fair, fitting, proper and appropriate" to grant anticipatory bail to the Acharya.
