Babloo Srivastava denied bail

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. The Delhi High Court today refused to grant bail to "notorious gangster" Babloo Srivastava, in a 13-year-old murder case here.

Justice B.D. Ahmed dismissed his bail application allowing a plea by the public prosecutor in the case, Pawan Sharma, that grant of bail to the accused would not be in the interest of society as the he was a dreaded gangster.

However, Justice Ahmed directed the trial court to wrap up the trial of the case as fast as possible, preferably within two months.

Srivastava, who was extradited here from Singrapore in 1995, through his counsel, S.P. Singh Chaudhary, had sought bail on the ground that his liberty was being unlawfully curtained by the prosecution as the trial court had failed to finish the trial within the time period fixed by the High Court.

Mr. Chaudhary submitted that the High Court had in July last year directed the trial court to conclude the trial by October, 2004 but it was still continuing.

He further submitted that the other three accused in the case had already been granted bail.

The High Court had earlier dismissed Srivastava's another application seeking a direction to the effect that he should be tried for only those offences for which he had been extradited.
