CHENNAI, FEB. 24. The Madras High Court today restrained the State authorities from forcibly evicting the tsunami-affected residents of Srinivasapuram and relocating them in temporary shelters. A similar order was obtained by residents of Anna Nagar Kuppam in North Chennai two weeks back. Granting the interim injunction on a petition filed by the Mylapore Kadarkarai Ora Kudisaivazh Makkal Koottamaippu today, a Division Bench, comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice A.R. Ramalingam, posted all the matters to February 28 for hearing. The petition, filed by Ravi Parayanar of the forum, said the tsunami washed away more than 50 people and hundreds of thatched huts in the region. More than 4,000 families were rendered homeless. On February 18, a large number of revenue officials, including the Chennai District Collector, and police officials came to Srinivasapuram and informed the residents that they should vacate the area by February 24,it said. He alleged that when the residents showed reluctance they were warned that if they failed to comply with the deadline a larger posse of officials, equipped with bulldozers would evict the residents and, if required, cases would be registered against them. They said the temporary shelters were nothing but "small claustrophobic tin boxes" and added that they were unfit for human habitation. "There are no public facilities like schools, shops and hospitals." Pointing out that pucca concrete houses had minimised the loss of life and property, the petitioner said the Government should construct concrete dwelling units at Srinivasapuram itself. The petitioner said that till permanent relocation was arranged, they should not be evicted, and requested a direction to the authorities to construct pucca houses.
