KOCHI, FEB. 24. The police had a tough time controlling the crowd that gathered to have a glimpse of R. Shaji, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Administration), Malappuram, who had been accused in the murder of Praveen, an employee in one of his buses. Presspersons and local people gathered in front of his residence at Palluruthy when news about his being brought to collect evidence spread. The accused appeared unfazed by the commotion created by his presence. At times, he was found cracking jokes with police officers standing guard to him. Some of the presspersons pointed out to the police that slabs of the septic tank on the premises have been worked on recently. The police soon brought in labourers to open the septic tank. But nothing was found to support the case. Presspersons then rushed to the Naval Base on the information that a human head was recovered from the Naval Ship Repair Yard. Even though the accused was brought to the scene of recovery, the police did not take him out of the jeep. The employees rushed to the vehicle to see him and when the police decided to return, the crowd reacted by jeering at him.
