`Revenue bodies need more support'

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 24. Even though the revenue collection has gone up phenomenally during the recent period, the fact remains that only 30 per cent of the total income tax due is being collected, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Kochi, B. Ravibalan, has said.

He was speaking at the Central Excise Day celebrations held here on Thursday. While it was imperative that rules on income tax should be simplified, the public should also cooperate in paying taxes to improve the condition, he said.

Only the tales of corrupt officers in the department were highlighted in the media, creating a wrong impression about the department among the public. There had been instances where agencies like the CBI had wrongly convicted officers without proper evidence and later closed the cases without much commotion. News like these rarely appeared in the media, Mr. Ravibalan said.

In his presidential address, P. Ayyam Perumal, Commissioner of Central Excise, Kochi, said that the Central Excise Department had evolved a lot in recent times, leaving behind many elements of the colonial legacy.

Speaking on the occasion, V.J. Kurien, Managing Director of Cochin International Airport Limited, said that the Central Excise Department should concentrate more on the prevention of cultivation and sale of ganja and other narcotic drugs, as they affected many generations.

M.P. Mohanan, Terminal Manager, HPCL, Kochi; S. Shanavas, Managing Director, Forest Industries Travancore Limited, Aluva; and Saju K. Abraham, a chartered accountant, spoke. Mr. Ravibalan also presented awards to the members of the Central Excise team that won the Federation Cup Basketball Championship.

B.C. Rajak, Joint Commissioner of Central Excise, welcomed the gathering and S.K. Singh, Additional Commissioner of Central Excise, proposed a vote of thanks.
