HYDERABAD, FEB. 24. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, on Thursday assured people of all possible support from the Government in improving conditions in the old city and ushering in development on par with the new city. Laying foundation stone for two new blocks at the Government Maternity Hospital, Nayapul, Mr. Rosaiah promised to explore the possibilities of locating big projects in the old city. He said the Government would extend necessary financial support to Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) in improving the infrastructure in these parts. Though he wished to earmark more allocation for medical and health in the budget, the constraints were too many to be overcome, Mr. Rosaiah said. And, "no fresh taxes to raise revenues were considered in the budget, since ours is a highly taxed State," he said.
New projects
The new projects being taken up at the Maternity Hospital include construction of maternity block on second floor at a cost of Rs. 70 lakhs and an in-patient, administration and blood bank block at an estimated amount of Rs. 1.50 crore. The Chandrayangutta MLA, Akbaruddin Owaisi, lamented the apathy towards the old city and sought bigger projects that could metamorphose this side of Musi river. "Whether it is IMAX, stadia or big parks, all go to new city while the old city is handed a raw deal," he said. Later, Mr. Rosaiah laid the foundation stone for construction of third floor at Diamond Jubilee Block in Osmania General Hospital at an estimated cost of Rs 2.50 crores. The Minister for Technical Education, Nayani Narasimha Reddy, the Secunderabad MP, Anjan Kumar Yadav, the Maharajgunj MLA, Mukesh, and QQSUDA Administrator, J.R. Anand, were present on the occasion.
