Probe into encounter

Chikmagalur Feb. 25. The Deputy Commissioner, Rajendra Kumar Kataria, has said that a magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the recent encounter in the district in which two naxalites were killed. He said that Mohan Kumar Sasanoor, Assistant Commissioner and sub-divisional magistrate, will conduct the inquiry on the premises of the Menasinahadya primary school on March 2 at 11 a.m.

Meet on liver diseases

Bangalore Feb. 25. Manipal Hospital and the Indian National Association for the Study of Liver will host an international mid-term conference on February 26 and 27 at Hotel Le Meridien here. Over 200 gastroenterologists and hepatologists from across India will participate in the conference and deliberate on Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infections. Nearly 15 per cent of all chronic liver diseases in India are caused by the Hepatitis C virus, while 45 per cent of the diseases is caused by the Hepatitis B virus. According to K.N.K. Shetty, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, and president of the organising committee of the conference, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are viral infections acquired through blood transfusion and sex. While Hepatitis B affects four per cent of the Indian population, the incidence of Hepatitis C is about one per cent.

IUML conference in Nagpur

MANGALORE FEB. 25. The Indian Union Muslim League will hold its all-India conference in Nagpur for three days from March 12, 2005, the organising secretary of the State unit of IUML, C. Ahmed Jamal, has said. Some 1,000 delegates from Karnataka are expected to attend the conference, which will be inaugurated by Panakkad Muhammadali Sihab Thangal, President of the Kerala unit of the IUML, he said in a release. G.M. Banatwala, President of IUML, will preside over the conference. The Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahmed, will attend the meet.

Govt. declares layout illegal

Bangalore Feb. 25. The Government has declared the housing layout being developed by Arun Shelters Private Ltd. at Thirumenahalli in Yelahanka here unauthorised as it has not been approved by the planning authority concerned. The Secretary, Urban Development, P. Ravikumar, has cautioned the public against being carried away by the false promises being made by the developers. The Government had taken against action them for their false claims, he said.

COMEDK results on Web

Bangalore Feb. 25. The Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) has posted the results of the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET-2005), conducted in January, on its website www.comedk.org. Candidates from Karnataka who have obtained the top 100 ranks include 54 in medical and 49 in dental. Non-Karnataka candidates in the top 100 constitute 46 in medical and 51 in dental, a release said. The total number of candidates who appeared for the entrance test was 6,585, of which 3,270 were from Karnataka. According to the website, the postgraduate degree and diploma courses in medical and dental studies for the year 2005-06 are expected to begin from May 2.

College's golden jubilee fete

Bangalore Feb. 25. The Davangere-based Kuvempu University's BDT College of Engineering will celebrate its golden jubilee on March 12 and 13. The BDT College of Engineering was the first engineering college established by the State Government in 1951. Till date, over 10,000 graduates have passed out of the college and the principal of the college, G.P. Prabhukumar, himself is one of its past students. The alumni of the college have created a corpus of Rs. 50 lakhs and constructed a multi-purpose auditorium to commemorate the golden jubilee year. The auditorium will be inaugurated by the Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath.

Insurance staff to protest

Bangalore Feb. 25. The All-India Insurance Employees' Association has decided to launch a Statewide demonstration on March 31 demanding increase in salary of all insurance company employees with immediate effect. K. Venugopal, general secretary of the association, told presspersons here on Friday that this was resolved at the 20th general conference of the association which concluded here on February 24. He said that the wage revision is pending since August 2002 and even though the Life Insurance Corporation and other general insurance companies are financially sound, no efforts have been made to implement the wage revision for their employees. If the Government goes ahead with the proposal to increase foreign direct investment in the insurance sector, a campaign will be launched to protest against it. A one-day protest will be organised against it, he said. Employees of the insurance companies — General Insurance Corporation, United India Insurance, National Insurance, New India Assurance and Oriental Insurance — will hold protests on March 23 and 24 opposing the FDI increase in the insurance sector, he added.

Six houses gutted

BIJAPUR FEB. 25. Six houses were gutted in a fire accident at Sarwad village, 20 km from here, on Friday.

The house of Eesappa Parshetti was the first to be gutted. At around 11 a.m., a fire that started in the kitchen of his house spread to the surrounding buildings. The houses burned down by the time fire engines arrived at the spot.

Chaos prevailed in the village for some time and the residents of the adjoining buildings deserted their houses. However, the firemen managed to stop the fire from spreading further. No casualties were reported.

The Bijapur tahsildar, S.S. Nagthan, visited the spot. The initial estimate of the loss has been put at Rs. 2 lakhs.

Man stabbed

GULBARGA Feb. 25. Two persons on a motorcycle reportedly stabbed a close relative of the former Minister Baburao Chinchansur after throwing chilli powder on his face on Thursday night in the heart of the city.

According to information reaching the police headquarters here on Friday, the victim, Ramesh, who is Mr. Chinchansur's brother-in-law, was attacked with knives by two persons when he was returning home after visiting a friend. The police said that the attackers fled when they saw a vehicle approaching. Ramesh, who was initially admitted to the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital with multiple stab injuries, has been shifted to Hyderabad for further treatment.

Launched

DHARWAD Feb. 25. L.V. Venkanagowdar, Professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, released here on Thursday the first copy of "Business Rural India'', a monthly magazine brought out by the Council for Advancement of Peoples Action and Rural Technology (CAPART).

The copy of the new publication was released at the regional office a day after a similar function had been held at the head office of CAPART in New Delhi.

Dr. Venkanagowdar appreciating the initiative taken by CAPART expressed the view that the new magazine would help promote rural business in the global scenario.

Surendra Kumar, Officer in-charge of the Dharwad Regional Office of CAPART, welcomed the gathering.

Arrested

Madikeri Feb. 25. M.E. Rao, a contestant for a Kolagadal gram panchayat seat, near Bhagamandala in Kodagu, was arrested following complaints of opening fire at another candidate, apparently to prevent the latter from canvassing on Thursday.

According to information received here on Friday, Mr. Rao opened two rounds of fire in the direction of Baddira Nanda from Bengur village to prevent him from seeking votes. Nanda lodged a complaint with the Bhagamandala police, following which Rao was arrested and gun seized.
