Six houses gutted
The house of Eesappa Parshetti was the first to be gutted. At around 11 a.m., a fire that started in the kitchen of his house spread to the surrounding buildings. The houses burned down by the time fire engines arrived at the spot. Chaos prevailed in the village for some time and the residents of the adjoining buildings deserted their houses. However, the firemen managed to stop the fire from spreading further. No casualties were reported. The Bijapur tahsildar, S.S. Nagthan, visited the spot. The initial estimate of the loss has been put at Rs. 2 lakhs.
Man stabbed
According to information reaching the police headquarters here on Friday, the victim, Ramesh, who is Mr. Chinchansur's brother-in-law, was attacked with knives by two persons when he was returning home after visiting a friend. The police said that the attackers fled when they saw a vehicle approaching. Ramesh, who was initially admitted to the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital with multiple stab injuries, has been shifted to Hyderabad for further treatment.
Launched
The copy of the new publication was released at the regional office a day after a similar function had been held at the head office of CAPART in New Delhi. Dr. Venkanagowdar appreciating the initiative taken by CAPART expressed the view that the new magazine would help promote rural business in the global scenario. Surendra Kumar, Officer in-charge of the Dharwad Regional Office of CAPART, welcomed the gathering.
Arrested
According to information received here on Friday, Mr. Rao opened two rounds of fire in the direction of Baddira Nanda from Bengur village to prevent him from seeking votes. Nanda lodged a complaint with the Bhagamandala police, following which Rao was arrested and gun seized.
