Volleyball camp inaugurated

VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 25. The third and final camp of the Indian girls for the Asian Youth volleyball championship, to be held in Manila in May, was inaugurated at the Port Indoor Stadium here on Friday evening.

Twenty-four probables, including international Piali Roy of Bengal, Kavita of AP, who participated in the Asian children's meet in Russia, and three more spikers from AP, Mounika Reddy, Smitha and Swapna Reddy, are here for the 45-day camp.

The chief coach of the camp, Pramod Kumar Reddy, was optimistic. ``Last time's team was good. A camp for 45 days was held then and the present team would have attended a camp for six months when the present one concludes. This long session should bring the team's standards to what it achieved in 2003," he said.

Reddy will be assisted by Md. Kalamdar of Karnataka and Bhanu Prasad of UP. An 18-member Indian team will be selected after the camp.

The camp was inaugurated by the wife of Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, K. Durga Ratna Kishore. The president of the AP Volleyball Association, S. Kodandaramiah, the Secretary of the VPT, Naresh Kumar, the Sports Officer and a former Olympian, M.V. Manikyalu, were also present.
