TIRUPATI, FEB. 25. Deploring the dismal educational status of women in the country, the Vice-Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC), V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, has underlined the need to link all the women's study centres in the country. Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on `Networking of the centres for women's studies in South India', organised by Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV), he said the ultimate goal of networking was to integrate women's studies into the mainstream discipline, which would ensure better cohesion in the working of the women's study centres. He also referred to the economist, Amartya Sen's article `Missing women', published in the British Medical Journal, which focussed on the deplorable status of women in the country. Dr. Pillai lauded the SPMVV for initiating the ambitious networking process, which could help in interpreting and effectively utilising the professional and physical capabilities of various centres spread across the country.
Need for consortium
Acknowledging the positive step taken in the right direction, Susheela Kaushik, former Director, Centre for Women's Studies, Delhi University, indicated the need for a consortium of women's study centres recalling the National Education Policy of 1986, which highlighted the need for every college in the country to have an exclusive centre for women's studies. She appealed to Dr. Pillai to attach special focus on integrating the women's centres into the mainstream, and make them a statutory body.
Central varsity status sought
The SPMVV Vice-Chancellor, Veena Noble Dass, sought central university status to SPMVV, as it was the only women's university in the State, located in a semi-urban area and having no colleges affiliated to it. K. A. Parvathi, Director, Centre for Women's Studies, SPMVV welcomed the gathering. Delegates from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Pondicherry took part in the programme. Earlier, Dr. Pillai laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 1.2-crore extension unit of the existing science block on the campus.
