Paritala killing rocks Assembly again

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 25. The issue of Paritala Ravi's murder rocked the Assembly again on Friday, pitting the Telugu Desam and Congress members against each other and forcing the Chair to adjourn the House abruptly for the day.

Tempers ran high when N. Janardhan Reddy, Telugu Desam Legislature Party deputy leader, alleged that the murder was engineered by the Government and called the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a faction leader. Congress members, led by N. Kirankumar Reddy, shouted him down.

The Telugu Desam members moved to the podium angrily when the Panel Speaker, C. Narsi Reddy, withdrew the mike to Dr. Janardhan Reddy. They resumed their seats later.

Special court sought

Dr. Janardhan Reddy demanded a special court for trying the murder case and reiterated his party's other demands -- dismissal of the Rajasekhara Reddy government, probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge and action against R. P. Meena, Inspector-General of Police, Rayalaseema. He questioned the propriety of continuing Mr. Meena as IG and allowing him to sit in the officer's box on the right side of the Chair and sought his arrest. There was another round of noisy protest from treasury benches.

Countering Dr Reddy, a Congress member, V. Vasanth Kumar alleged involvement of the Telugu Desam and said it was the previous Government that encouraged "mafia culture." The TDP was only interested in getting political mileage. He made certain remarks against N. Chandrababu Naidu, touching off protest from Telugu Desam benches.

Mr. Naidu suggested that the Chair close the subject after giving him an opportunity and the Home Minister's reply. But with Congress members insisting on Mr. Vasanth Kumar continuing, the panel Speaker adjourned the House.
