CHENNAI, FEB. 25. The residents of Avadi can expect more water this year as their municipality has allocated about Rs. 3 crores to draw water from Kovilpadagai lake for domestic supply. The municipality has allotted funds for the installation of handpumps and drawing of water from local resources. In the 2005-06 budget, the municipality has set apart Rs. 4.17 crores for water supply, including laying pipelines and sinking borewells. Last year, the allocation was Rs. 1.50 crores for water supply. An additional Rs. 1.75 crores was allotted for borewells and installation of handpumps. Presenting the budget at the council meeting on Friday, the municipal chairman, S.M. Nasar, said it was decided to allocate more funds this year to tackle the water supply situation. Additional structures for schools in the locality under the education fund was another highlight in the budget, with Rs.1.82 crores being allotted compared to the Rs. 25 lakhs set apart the previous year. About Rs. 12 crores would be spent on construction and re-laying of roads in several areas, including Tirumullaivoyal and Pattabiram. The budget estimate detailed an opening balance of Rs. 7.93 crores. Revenue was expected to touch Rs. 28.13 crores and expenses Rs. 28.06 crores, with a surplus of 7.33 crores. A resolution to provide essential infrastructure for a compost yard as per the Supreme Court directive in the Sekkadu dumping yard was passed. About 20 resolutions pertaining to laying of roads and water supply were passed.
