COIMBATORE, FEB. 25 . The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is focussing on promotion of biomass-based energy systems in the State, its Chairman and Managing Director, K. Allaudin, told presspersons here today. Large-scale biomass-based energy generation units, called biomass power units, had been planned mainly for industries. Of the 110 applications received from promoters, 37 had been selected and these would install totally 250 MW of biomass power units. These would come up in Thoothukudi, Pudukottai, Perambalur and Villupuram areas. Apart from this, small-scale units called biomass gasifier had been proposed for the captive consumption of individual units and 14 projects had been sanctioned. Of these, six, including two in Coimbatore, had already been commissioned. With regard to panchayats, 84 projects had been sanctioned for their use. Coimbatore district would have 32 of these to be used mainly for water pumping and streetlighting. He said that under a pilot project, a plant for drying fish using solar air was planned to be set up in Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai. The TEDA had sought sanction for 7,500 solar streetlights in the State. He inaugurated a seminar on importance of solar energy and energy efficiency and conservation organised here by the TEDA, PSG College of Technology and the Solar Energy Society of India, Coimbatore Chapter.
