Flyover work to start on March 1

By Our Staff Reporter

The proposed flyover at Bakery Junction.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 25. Work on the proposed flyover at Bakery Junction will begin on March 1, signalling the second phase of the City Roads Improvement Scheme.

Piling work is expected to start soon. The piers and girders will be cast at the site to avoid the inconvenience of transporting the huge spans from the casting site at Chakka.

Traffic along the Bakery Junction-Thampanoor road will be diverted during the construction period.

The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company (TRDC) has submitted a diversion plan to be discussed by the City Traffic Advisory Committee.

A project manager said the original idea of transporting pre-cast girders from the casting site at Chakka was abandoned because of the difficulty in moving the 25-metre spans across the city.

"The narrow roads and the heavy traffic do not permit the use of wide-bodied multi-axle trucks that would be required for the purpose," he said.

The flyover is a major component of the proposed inner ring road covering Palayam, Bakery Junction, Panavila, Thampanoor, Overbridge, Uppidamoodu, Vanchiyoor, Pattoor and the General Hospital junction.

Amayizhanjan canal

The open canal from Bakery Junction to Panavila is to be covered with concrete slabs to accommodate the service road for the flyover. The concrete cover will be built as a box structure to withstand heavy loads. "The flow of water will be maintained throughout the construction phase. Each half of the canal will be blocked and the water pumped to the other side," a project manager said.

Underpass construction

Work on the underpass at Palayam on the Martyr's Column side is progressing on schedule. The construction of the retaining walls is almost over and surface concreting is scheduled to be completed by March 5. "Once the box on this side is completed, MG Road from the Public Library to VJT hall will be closed and traffic routed across the tunnel. This will enable us to extend the construction of the underpass to the other side of the MG Road," a TRDC spokesman said.

The construction of the service road from Panjappura to the Palayam Junction is also expected to be completed in a week.

Chakka bridge

The reconstruction of the Chakka bridge on the Airport Road corridor has been taken up. The bypass link road from Poonthi Road to the KIMS hospital at Venpalavattom is also under construction.
