Restoration of traffic on highway likely to be delayed
By Our Staff Reporter
JAWAHAR TUNNEL,
FEB. 26.
Early restoration of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway 1 A may not be possible given the logistics and adverse weather conditions. The 2.5-km long Jawahar Tunnel is covered with 10 to 20 feet of snowfall.
Though the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, announced here on Wednesday that the tunnel had been cleared, the next day there was fresh snowfall closing it again.
The tunnel is still regarded as an engineering marvel on the Pir Panjal heights and was constructed by German engineers in 1958 during the tenure of Prime Minister (the then Chief Minister was known as Prime Minister), Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad.
The southern end is covered with snow, with only a portion closer to the tube cleared forpeople moving on foot. It may take more than 12 to 14 days for snow-clearing machines to do the job. The condition at the northern end is no different as machines have yet to clear tonnes of snow gathered around the tunnel.
Authorities said the snow had turned very hard and it was difficult to break it with bulldozers. Over 50 landslips have hit the National Highway from Ramban to Banihal which is a hilly stretch. Officials said there was still fear of fresh avalanches at various places near the tunnel.
The Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, reviewed the situation at a Unified Headquarters meet on Friday.
