NAGERCOIL, FEB.26. The tsunami-affected fishermen community can collect relief materials announced by the Government such as rice and others essential commodities for three months from their nearest fair price shops. Revenue officials will hand over cash amount of Rs.1000 each to them personally, said the Collector Sunil Paliwal. Distributing the second phase of relief materials to the affected fishermen community at Keeza Manakudi on Saturday, he said all 44,000 affected families in the coastal areas of the district would be distributed rice and other essential commodities worth Rs.526 and Rs1000 in cash each for another three months. The Government had already announced a package for the benefit of those fishermen who had lost their boats and other implements. They should make use of the measures so that they could resume fishing, he said. The Collector also distributed vessels to fisherwomen at Kottilpadu near Colachel at a function organised by a non-governmental organisation, SCAD, in order to facilitate the fisherwomen to carry fish for sale. A philanthropist came forward to construct a health centre at Kottilpadu and the district administration would extend all assistance to him, said the Collector.
