KOCHI, FEB. 26. The Mangalavanam Environmental Protection Council has submitted many suggestions for the protection of mangroves and a bird sanctuary in the forest at a meeting convened by the Chief Conservator of Forests. The council suggested that the State Government take over the area near Mangalavanam where an old railway station was situated. The 3.44 hectares of land, including water bodies, inside the forest should be declared a core area. Construction should be banned and entry restricted in this area. The council suggested that fruit-bearing trees be planted on five hectares of land that would make up a buffer area, which was necessary to protect the core area. A centre should be set up in the buffer area for conducting studies on mangroves and birds. Various types of mangroves found in different parts of the State should be grown in the buffer and core areas, both of which should be fenced. A rock pavement could be laid around the buffer zone. Another suggestion was that 8.44 hectares of land be declared a silent zone. Information boards on birds and other species found in Mangalavanam should be put up. The old railway station should be renovated and made a monument. Steps should be taken to keep the areas around Mangalavanam clean.
