Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 27. The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president and Member of Parliament, V. Narayanasamy, has welcomed the announcement in the railway budget that the Villupuram-Pondicherry broad gauge track would be electrified this year. In a release here today, Mr. Narayanasamy said that the proposal to conduct a survey for a rail link from Chennai to Cuddalore via Mahabalipuram was also good. He hailed the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, for leaving the passenger and freight rates untouched. The concessions announced for the unemployed, the rural students, farmers and milk producers showed his concern for the youth and the students, Mr. Narayansamy said. The reintroduction of the Chennai-Pondicherry link services would boost the tourist flow into Pondicherry. A. Balasubramanian, the member of the Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee and secretary of the Pondicherry Chamber of Commerce, wanted an early re-introduction of the Pondicherry-Egmore express train. He also wanted direct train links between Pondicherry and the country's major cities. The Bharatiya Janata party legislator, A.M. Krishnamoorthy, said it was a lacklustre budget that had ignored the demand for a direct train link from the Union Territory to New Delhi. Also, it had ignored the demand for a new track to link Tindivanam with Cuddalore via Pondicherry.
