Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's address to Parliament at the start of the budget session ("Committed to common man," Feb. 26). He has rightly identified naxalite violence as one of the challenges to national security. The naxal problem spans many States. A coordinated approach in dealing with the issue is the need of the hour.
Avuthu Srihari,
* * * Sir, Almost every day, there are reports of Maoists being gunned down in an encounter in Andhra Pradesh. It is surprising why, when the Government has categorically stated that it has not called off the talks with the naxalites, the police are conducting combing operations leading to encounters. Both sides must observe restraint and try to sort things out across the table, so that the deprived sections are benefited.
Khaja Hameeduddin,
