THANJAVUR, FEB. 27. Broad gauge conversion work between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur is going on at a fast pace . Southern Railway officials said 60 per cent of the work has been completed.

The gauge conversion was part of the work between Trichy and Nagore. Broad gauge conversion between Trichy and Thanjavur has already been completed.

Work on the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur section was taken up on July 1 2004. The project cost is Rs. 65 crores for a distance of 55 km.

Water released from the Mettur dam for samba cultivation delayed the work for some time . Now, it has gained momentum.

The section has six crossing stations. All of them have new buildings under construction. At Needamangalam, the new station building is nearing completion. The section has ten major bridges and 136 minor bridges. Pillars have been raised in all the major bridges.

Required materials like metals, pre-stress concrete sleepers and rails have been kept at required places.

The section has 36 manned and unmanned level crossings. "A cabin is built for receiving trains at the Tiruvarur railway station," officials said.

Eagerly awaited

Gauge conversion in the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur section and the Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam section is eagerly awaited by the people of Thanajvur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

When work was going on between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, relief materials sent in trains from States like Gujarat for tsunami victims in Nagapattinam had to be shifted to lorries at the Thanajvur station and sent to Nagapattinam.

People said as long-term measures were going to be initiated in Nagapattinam for the tsunami victims, gauge conversion had to be completed quickly between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur and again from Tiruvarur and Nagore .
