Uttar Pradesh
AURAIYYA, FEB. 27. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader, Kalyan Singh, today lambasted the Mulayam Singh Yadav government for ``failing'' to maintain law and order in the state. Addressing a farmers' meet here, Mr Singh said in the name of development, the state government only boasted of ``countless murder, kidnapping and rape cases.'' ``There are lakhs of unemployed youths in U.P., while about 50,000 people commit suicide every year. But, the state government has never given any thought to these distressing phenomena,'' he added. Mr Singh said financial hardships of farmers stemmed from the fact that they did not get right price for their produce. He called upon farmers to stop the use of chemical fertilisers in farming, and revert to cow dung to retain land productivity. The former U.P. CM lamented that even after 56 years of country's Independence, the farmers were a neglected community.
Mulayam reassures traders
Meanwhile in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today called upon traders and businessmen for active participation in politics and assured them full protection. Addressing traders' organisation here, he said U.P. was the only State in the country opposing VAT despite pressure from the Centre. Mr Yadav maintained that his government would support the cause of businessmen and traders at all cost. ``Farmers and traders contribute 90 per cent towards the Indian economy. Therefore, the government should try to protect their interests,'' he observed. The Chief Minister reiterated his government was committed to making Uttar Pradesh an Uttam Pradesh (ideal state) by implementing developmental plans and policies.
