MANGALORE, FEB. 27. A meeting of Vishwakarmas (traditional sculptors) here on Sunday demanded the Government to constitute five corporations to promote sculpture.

It demanded corporations for kasta shilpa (wood sculpture), loha shilpa (metal casts), shila shilpa (stone sculpture), swarna shilpa (work of goldsmith) and kabbinada shilpa (work of blacksmith).

The meet said only Vishwakarmas should be posted to head these corporations.

Sri Shivasujnanamurthy Swamy of Sujnana Prabhu Peetha, Aremadanahalli, Hassan, inaugurated the meeting.

A resolution adopted at the meeting said the meeting was organised to draw the attention of the Government to the problems faced by Vishwakarmas. There are over 40 lakh traditional sculptors in the State.

Their profession is facing threat. Production of readymade items and equipment from factories are the reasons for this.

In the past, Vishwakarmas had patronage of kings. But they have lost the patronage of the Government now.

The meeting demanded that the Government should provide at least 5 per cent reservation to Vishwakarmas in education and job recruitments and make arrangements to provide free training in the said branches of their profession. The Government should provide health cards to traditional sculptors and ensure that they get raw materials at reasonable rate.

Kalahastendra Saraswati Swamy and N. Yogish Bhat, and Shankuntala Shetty, MLAs, participated in the same. Baikady Janardhana Achar delivered the introductory address. Pashupati Ullal welcomed the gathering.

A procession was taken out from Jyothi Circle to Nehru Maidan.
