COIMBATORE, FEB. 27. The industry associations here have welcomed the Railway Budget, especially with regard to introduction of new trains. According to the vice-president of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association, Jayakumar Ramadass, the announcements on continuing the passenger and freight charges, renovation of 411 railway bridges across the country and extension of Coimbatore-Thanjavur Shatabdi Express up to Kumbakonam are welcome. However, he expressed disappointment that no announcements were made on new trains from Coimbatore, infrastructure development for the Coimbatore junction and about the Coimbatore Railway Division. The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association president, J. Balu, said that it was a "passenger-friendly budget" and it was "gratifying to note that there is no increase in the passenger fares as well as parcel rates." However, he appealed to the Railway Minister to consider increasing the frequency of passenger trains between Coimbatore and Pollachi and Coimbatore and Mettupalayam and sought additional night trains from Coimbatore to Chennai and Bangalore. The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has said that the reforms initiated by the Railway Minister would make the railways "freight customer-friendly organisation." However, by leaving passenger fares untouched, the Minister had chosen to persist with cross-subsidisation of freight rates, said the Chamber president, A. Sakthivel. He appealed to the Centre to consider introduction of trains between Coimbatore and Northern States and introduction of an exclusive night train between Coimbatore and Bangalore.
