Recognise sportspersons

Sir, — It is nice to know that the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, felicitated the new sports sensation, Sania Mirza. She is no doubt a promising teenager with potential to become good player. But, has she achieved so much that Mr. Dharam Singh thought it fit to give her a reward of Rs. 5 lakhs?

Anup Sridhar won a tough senior national badminton championship in Jamshedpur early this month and received Rs. 24,000 as prize money.

Anup Sridhar and Arvind Bhat recently won an international badminton championship in Toulouse and Scottish Open.

Both of them are from the State and deserve to be honoured by the Government.

A similar award would have gone a long way in encouraging young sportsmen from all disciplines from the State.

Shelter for stray animals

Sir, — Bangalore not only has stray dogs, but stray cattle, monkeys, horses, and other animals to take care of. The residents of Yelahanka have come up with an idea to solve the problem effectively.

Each layout should have its own shelter. A portion of property tax could be allocated for this purpose. The shelters could be made economically viable by running veterinary clinics and lodging kennels for pets. All the stray animals from the locality could be housed in this shelter. Residents should be encouraged to adopt pets from the shelter, and industries around the locality could be asked to sponsor a portion of the expenditure.

Power cuts

Sir, — Frequent power cuts have become the order of the day in many parts of the city, including Puttenahalli, Gowravanagar 7th Phase, Kothanur Dinne, RBI Colony layouts, Eshwar layout, and Jaraganahalli. Efforts to maintain a record of these unscheduled power cuts have proven to be futile. The frequent power cuts affect schoolchildren the most, especially since it is examination time.

Safety on

highways

Sir, — The accident at Rudrakshipura in Maddurur taluk that killed 18 people is only a preview of what is in store for commuters on the Bangalore-Mysore Road. The stretch from Jnana Bharathi to Ramanagaram is most vulnerable to accidents. There are innumerable curves that do not conform to the standards set by the Indian Roads Congress.

The authorities can introduce safety precautions such as preventing overcrowding of vehicles, enforcing speed restrictions, widening shoulder width, building crash barriers, and reducing curves, to prevent accidents.

H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana,

Mysore
