Interrogation of 'gutka' baron: court raps CBI

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, FEB. 28. The Bombay High Court today pulled up the Central Bureau of Investigation for questioning `gutka' baron Jagdish Joshi on his alleged nexus with the underworld without obtaining appropriate orders from the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court that had issued a warrant against him.

A Division Bench of the High Court, comprising Mr. Justice R.M.S. Khanderparkar and Mr. Justice P.V. Kakade, directed the CBI to produce Mr. Joshi before the appropriate court that had issued non-bailable warrant against him and get appropriate orders for his interrogation.

Counsel for the CBI, Raja Thakeray, assured the court that the agency would take him to the lower court for the orders. He admitted the lapse on the part of the CBI.

Mr. Joshi had earlier challenged the non-bailable warrant issued against him by the lower court for failing to appear before the investigating authorities. His lawyer had assured the High Court that Mr. Joshi would return from the United Arab Emirates and appear before the CBI on February 25.

The court had adjourned the matter to February 28. He returned to India and appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigations, which interrogated him.

Later, the CBI sought time from the MCOCA special court to decide about Mr. Joshi's arrest, as the latter urged the court to revoke the non-bailable warrant against him. The Designated Judge, A.P. Bhangale, adjourned the matter to March 9 next.
