Sagar decked up for Marikamba Jatre

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, FEB. 28. The stage is set for the 10-day Sri Marikamba Jatre at Sagar, about 70 km. from here.

The jatre, which is held once in three years, attracts a large number of devotees from far-off places.

The former minister Kagodu Thimmappa, who hails from Sagar taluk, inaugurated the celebrations on Monday.

He said the jatre will be held at the ground near the Ganapathi tank from next year to avoid the congestion in the town. The jatre is held according to religious rites and rituals.

Legend has it that the idol of Marikamba was installed by the Adi Sankaracharya. The temple was constructed subsequently in the heart of the town and the idol was shifted to the temple.

The wooden carving, which is 16-foot high, is decked up colourfully for the occasion.

The jatre is also considered a leading cultural event of the region.

An exhibition to be held as part of the jatre attracts vendors from throughout the country. Reputed artistes and musicians participate in the cultural programmes held on the occasion.

According to U.L. Subhashchandra, president of the Organising Committee of the jatre, many development works are taken up in the town from the savings from the donations made by the devotees. He says that over Rs. 25 lakhs is expected to be collected by way of donations.
