HYDERABAD, FEB. 28. Students of social welfare hostels in Hyderabad district are expected to fare better in the SSC examination this year in view of the several steps taken by the authorities to improve their performance. The authorities are undertaking individual assessment of the students and providing special coaching to slow learners. "The pass percentage in the tenth class never crossed 30. But this time, we are expecting cent per cent result," said T. Vijaya Kumar, Deputy Director, Social Welfare. He told presspersons here on Monday that for the first time tuition was also being given to students of 8th and 9th standards, instead of limiting the facility to students of seventh and tenth classes. Functioning of schools in the shift system was the primary cause for the poor showing in the tenth class. Of the 825 schools in the twin cities, 285 were running in shift system. The Government had converted 200 schools to regular shift. From June there would be no more shift system, as all schools would function in the regular shift, Mr. Vijya Kumar said. He said it was decided to house all the 33 social welfare hostels in the City in Government buildings. While all the six hostels for schoolgirls were located in Government buildings, this was not the case with the boys' hostels. Recently, six hostel buildings for boys were constructed while work on five more was under progress. They would be ready by June-end. Besides improving the physical environment, the new premises were expected to boost the academic standards, Mr. Vijaya Kumar said.
No power cut
He said from January, centralised power billing was introduced for the social welfare hostels. The department itself would pay the power charges instead of the hostels. Hereafter, there would be no threat of disconnection of power supply to hostels. He said a circular had been issued to non-boarders to vacate hostels. The boys college hostel at Kachiguda particularly faced the problem of nearly 200 students overstaying on the pretext of writing some exam or the other. Now they were told to vacate the hostel by next week.
