Live telecast of surgeries at Islamic Academy

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, FEB. 28. The medical institutions attached to Islamic Academy of Education here will soon have permanent facilities to telecast live surgeries conducted at its operation theatre to a lecture hall on campus at Deralakatte near here.

Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, academy chairman, has given the go ahead to put such an arrangement in place.

Mohammed Tahir, academy director, said that the Department of ENT at Yenepoya Medical College has hired professionals to telecast a live ear surgery workshop and temporal bone dissection demonstration, which concluded on Sunday. H. Vijayendra, Otolaryngology from Bangalore, conducted the two-day camp, he noted.

Dr. Tahir said Mr. Kunhi was impressed with the manner in which the workshop was conducted. He had agreed to sanction funds for permanent live telecast facility. He said live surgery workshop was the first of its kind organised on the campus. A permanent telecast facility will be handy for similar academic ventures in future.

Nearly 60 delegates from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka are participating in the workshop.

While most delegates are post-graduate students, Dr. Thahir said even retired professors and ENT surgeons from various parts of Dakshina Kannada attended the workshop.

The delegates were impressed on seeing Dr. Vijayendra in action and learnt a lot from his expertise.

He said the academy has in place a system for free treatment to needy patients at its hospitals.

The academy has applied to the Medical Council of India to start postgraduate courses in many disciplines, including ENT, and hoped that it will receive permission for the same soon.
