MADURAI, FEB.28. The Corporation has taken up traffic island improvement works here at a cost of Rs.26.85 lakhs as part of a beautification programme, according to C. Rajamani, Commissioner (in-charge).

Nagar and Thavitu Sandhai junction traffic island improvement works at a cost of 4.5 lakhs each and Palanganatham traffic island works at a cost of Rs.6.65 lakhs.

From 2001 to the current financial year, 2004-2005, every year the number of road laying works taken up by the Corporation was on the rise, Mr. Rajamani said.

During 2004, the Corporation took up laying of cement concrete roads to the tune of Rs.98.95 lakhs and bitumen roads at a cost of Rs.433.39 lakhs, which was almost double the work done in 2001, he said. A sum of Rs. 205.41 lakhs and Rs. 695.79 lakhs had been sanctioned for laying of concrete and bitumen roads respectively, Mr. Rajamani said.

Second pipeline from Vaigai dam

The Corporation received the project report for the 64-km second drinking water pipeline from the Vaigai dam under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project. The completion of the project, which was estimated to cost Rs.62.69 crores, would reduce drinking water problem in the city, as loss of water, from the allotted 600 mcft of water released on the Vaigai, through percolation, evaporation and illegal pumping would be greatly minimised, the Commissioner said.

The parallel pipeline would facilitate more water pressure, he said, adding that the Corporation would request the Government to give grants for the project.

The project would be tabled in the next council meeting for approval and after getting a due approval from the council and the Government, it would be implemented, Mr. Rajamani said.

The storage level in the Vaigai dam indicated that it would be sufficient to meet the city's drinking water needs up to mid-April and after that the onset of monsoon would help improve the level, he added.
