This Day That Age
The Congress Party has won 17 out of the 25 seats in the 196-member Andhra Legislative Assembly, the results of which were announced till the evening of March 1. The elections were held in five phases last month. The Congress has already three unopposed returns to its credit. The latest party position is: Congress 20 (including three unopposed returns), Independents 4, Communist 1 and PSP 3. Counting of votes polled in 51 constituencies commenced at 8 a.m. on March 1 at 48 centres spread all over the State. Under heavy police escort the ballot boxes were brought to the counting rooms and after close scrutiny by agents of the contestants, the seals were broken and the counting commenced. Outside the counting stations members of the State's armed reserve constabulary were standing by to meet any emergency that might arise. One hundred and sixty-one candidates had contested for these 51 seats. The United Congress Party had put up 50 partymen and backed one Independent, the Communists contested 44 seats, 15 were Praja Socialists, three were Jan Sangh nominees and 47 were Independents.
