`Modernise powerlooms'

ERODE, MARCH 1. Powerloom owners and weavers should modernise their looms and reduce their cost of production, said the Deputy Director, Textiles, Coimbatore Region, Bandhobadyay.

He was addressing a seminar on `Development Textile Industry,' organised by the Powerloom Service Centre in Erode on Monday.

He said only 2 per cent of the looms in the country were shuttleless, but in Pakistan more than 33 per cent of the looms were shuttleless.

He said the country's share in textile export was only 2 per cent and this should be increased. To achieve it, the powerloom weavers should stress on quality and modernise the designs suited to an international market.

After the removal of the quota system, more countries will start exporting textiles. He said already sites for powerloom parks have been identified at Aandipatty, Palladam and Komarapalayam. A suitable site would be selected soon for the park in Erode.
