17,000 Indians return from Malaysia during amnesty period

KUALA LUMPUR, MARCH 1. At least 17,000 Indians are among the 4,00,000 alleged illegal workers who have left Malaysia for home taking advantage of the four-month-old amnesty that ended today.

As the amnesty came to an end, the Malaysian police began a crackdown on illegal workers, mostly from Indonesia, arresting more than 110 people.

At least 17,000 Indians illegally working in Malaysia had returned to India during the amnesty period, an Indian embassy official told PTI.

``At least 4,000 nationals were issued fresh passports to return to India,'' the official said. Many whose passports expired could also have left the country.

The police yesterday raided workplaces to weed out illegal workers. Over 110 people were arrested on charges of overstaying.

In one of the earliest raids, named `Operation Tegas,' Malaysian immigration officials, armed with pistols and sticks, cordoned off a construction site outside Kuala Lumpur and detained some 40 foreigners after they failed to produce travel documents.

Those arrested could face heavy fines, jail sentences and whipping.

Malaysia depends heavily on foreign labour to help in plantations, construction industry, factoriesand domestic work. A majority of the workers are from Indonesia, while the rest are from India, Bangladesh and the Philippines. — PTI
