IN THE GENERAL'S COMPANY: Left leaders Harkishan Singh Surjeet (centre) and A.B. Bardhan (right) with the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. AP
ISLAMABAD, MARCH 1. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, has ordered the immediate release of 200 Indian civilian prisoners who have completed their term in Pakistan's jails. The prisoners, mostly those detained while attempting to cross over to Pakistan in search of better economic opportunities, are languishing in different parts of the country. Gen. Musharraf met visiting Left leaders from India the first such journey to Pakistan since independence led by the CPI (M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet and the CPI general secretary, A.B. Bardhan. In the course of their hour-long meeting at the Army House in Rawalpindi at the behest of Gen. Musharraf, they exchanged views on a whole range of issues related to the dialogue process with India, peace and prosperity in the region. In an informal talk with journalists at a luncheon hosted by the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, Mr. Surjeet said they were impressed with the sincerity of Gen. Musharraf in pursuing peace with India. Mr. Bardhan quoted Gen. Musharraf as telling them that he would like to go down in history as someone who has resolved all differences with India and paved the way for permanent peace and stability in the region. "He was forthright in answering all our questions including some inconvenient ones," Mr. Bardhan said. Mr. Surjeet and Mr. Bardhan also appealed to Gen. Musharraf to release the Indian fishermen held for illegal fishing in Pakistani waters. Gen. Musharraf reportedly agreed with the views of the two leaders that it served little purpose in detaining the poor fishermen and promised to direct the concerned authorities to work on a mechanism for their early release.
