Letters to the Editor
Sir, By withdrawing standard deduction and benefits under Section 80L, the Minister has only added to the woes of senior citizens. Investment in the approved savings schemes up to Rs. 1 lakh to avail themselves of the tax benefit can be of no use to those for whom the present is more important than the future.
K.R. Balasubramanian,
* * * Sir, A majority of senior citizens are burdened with health problems and medial expenditure. As such, investment in saving schemes is neither possible nor desirable as many may not be able to realise the proceeds on the investments. Resorting to insurance is also difficult because many have a history of diabetes and blood pressure making reimbursement of medical expenses a herculean task. The latest proposals have only imposed an additional burden on them.
N. Seshadri Narayanan,
