30 hostels to be set up

Bangalore March 1. The Minister for Social Welfare, Y. Nagappa, today announced that 30 pre-matric and post-matric residential schools will be set up from the next academic year with an intake of 100 students each. He told presspersons that the break-up is five each for minorities and tribal students and 10 each for Scheduled Caste and backward class students. Twenty-five residential schools (except for the minorities) are to be located at Kottur, Holalkere, Maddur, Santhemaranahalli, Gadag, Pavagada, Kalmella, Mysore (two), Chincholi, Balloli, Araballi, Davangere, Chamarajanagar, Hunsur, Periyapatna, Koppal, Hosadurga, Sathanur, Sorab, Mosalehosahalli, Kundapur, Sandur, Mulbagal and Ranebennur. Dr. Nagappa said the Social Welfare Department proposes to provide nursing training to 1,000 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates. The training will be for three years and will cost the exchequer Rs. 75,000 a year for one candidate.

Drinking water project

Bangalore March 1. A pilot project to provide river-based drinking water supply for Chamarajanagar district has been conceived by the State Government. The project is estimated at Rs. 211 crores and plans are afoot to seek assistance from the World Bank. Announcing this after a meeting with officials, the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, who is in charge of the district, said that as per the plan, 546 villages will be covered under the project. The proposal is to tap 1 tmcft of water from the Cauvery for drinking water supply. He said the taluks of Gundlupet (131 villages) and Chamarajanagar (166 villages) will source water from the Kabini and Kollegal (205 villages) and Yelandur (44 villages) from the Cauvery. Besides this, there is a proposal to provide water to 45 villages en route to Gundlupet at a cost of Rs. 3.91 crores and to 15 villages in Chamarajanagar taluk at a cost of Rs. 1.01 crores. Mr. Prasad said that the department has sent proposals for computerisation of the distribution of ration cards in rural areas and also to set up a State Consumer Welfare Fund from the unclaimed funds in various departments.

Dharam Singh for Delhi

Bangalore March 1. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is expected to leave for New Delhi on Thursday and call on the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, and other senior Congress leaders. It is being stated that he will use the occasion to discuss with the party High Command the expansion of the Ministry with the induction of two Ministers from the Congress. While the Janata Dal (Secular) has 17 Ministers, the Congress has two vacant slots.

Scholarship test

BANGALORE March 1. CADD Centre, a training institution offering industry-specific courses, will conduct its 8th annual scholarship eligibility test, "CADD QUEST 2005," on March 5, 6, 12 and 13 at all its centres across the State. The test is open to engineers, diploma holders, ITI certificate holders and other students. To appear for the test, candidate should collect an admission card from any CADD centre by paying a registration fee of Rs. 50. Students can get scholarships on all the CADD courses offered. The scholarships range from 15 per cent to 50 per cent of the fees, depending on the marks scored by the candidate. The test, according to the CADD Centre director, Karaiadi Selvan, will contain questions related to general knowledge, general English and some puzzles, along with few questions related to industry. With a network of over 100 centres across the country, besides Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, CADD Centre offers training on CAD in various disciplines of engineering such as mechanical, civil, architecture, industrial and management and electrical engineering.

BJP legislature party meet

Bangalore March 1. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, has convened a meeting of the BJP legislature party on Thursday to seek a vote of confidence in his leadership. He has convened the meeting in his capacity as leader of the legislature group, apparently against the backdrop of a section of party legislators expressing its dissatisfaction with his leadership and that of his counterpart in the Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy. Mr. Yediyurappa said here today that he will resign from the post if the legislators expressed displeasure over his performance. At the legislature party meeting, after a discussion on the party's stand on various subjects in the coming session of the legislature, Mr. Yediyurappa is expected to ask the legislators whether they have confidence in his leadership. He said he has done his best for over a decade for the growth of the party across the State. Contrary to what is now being stated, "I fought against the Government on various policy matters and misappropriation and corruption. I aggressively fought against the stamp paper scam and the diversion of foodgrains earmarked for the food-for-work programme. It is, therefore, improper to state that I have colluded with the Government."

Online payment

of taxes

Bangalore March 1. The State Bank of India has launched online payment of direct taxes, a facility which will be available to corporates and individuals who want to pay income tax, corporation tax, securities transaction tax, tax deducted at source, wealth tax, gift tax, estate duty and so on. The 24x7 facility is free of any charge. The facility here was inaugurated by the Controller-General of Accounts, H. Prabhakara Rao. Corporates can pay tax up to Rs. 100 crore per transaction depending on the type of Internet account maintained by them. For paying tax, one has to log on to www.tin-nsdl.com or SBI's www.onlinesbi.com and furnish particulars on the screen-based tax payment challans. The customer has to authorise the payment from his account with any of the SBI branches with Internet banking facility. Currently, the facility is available at 2,094 branches of the SBI of which corporate customers are active in 777 branches. The transaction happens in real time and the customer can get a printed receipt with details such as challan identification number (CIN) as proof of tax payment. All payments will be routed through the SBI, Focal Point Branch, Bangalore, to the Government for accounting purposes.

Medical camp for workers

Mysore March 1. Nanjangud Industries' Association and the Directorate of Factories and Boilers, Mysore Division, are jointly organising a free medical camp for industrial workers on Friday. The camp, arranged as part of the 34th National Safety Day, will be held at the Nanjangud Industrial Association, and KIADB Amenities Centre, Nanjangud from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is to renew the commitment of employees safety at workplace. The Superintendent of Police, Vipul Kumar, will inaugurate the medical camp.

ABVP to hold mock CET

Mysore March 1. Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) will conduct a Statewide mock Common Entrance Test (CET) on April 24 to familiarise students with the main examination scheduled to be conducted by the Government on May 3 and 4. The ABVP will provide specialised training for rural students and distribute 600 model questions and course materials provided by subject experts. Coaching for CET

Mysore March 1. Raman Vidyalaya will conduct coaching for Common Entrance Test (CET) with experienced teachers, model papers, study materials and solved question papers. CSIR-NET information

Mysore March 1. Gyanavikas Academy has set up an information cell that provides details pertaining to CSIR-NET examination to all aspirants. The CSIR-NET examination is scheduled to be held on June 19 for selection as lecturers and candidates with M.Sc., or equivalent qualification can apply. The last date for submitting the application at the CSIR is March 2 and for details, contact the Gyanvikas Academy, Rotary West School, Saraswathipuram, Mysore, on all working days between 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

KSOU examination

BIDAR MARCH. 1. Bridge course examinations for bachelor's and master's degrees of the Karnataka State Open University will be held at M.S. Irani College, Gulbarga, on Sunday. HUBLI MARCH. 1. The residents of the Girani Chawl area in Hubli staged a demonstration here on Monday demanding the property rights for the houses in which they had been staying there for quite long time. They said that they were paying the house tax, the cess for water and underground drainage. They had also paid for power connections.

Kattemma (20), wife of Sanneppa, who was seriously injured when a motorcycle hit her when she was walking on the Sindhanoor-Dhadesugur road near Srirampuram Junction near Sindhanoor town on Sunday, died at the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in Bellary on Monday.

The Sindhanoor Rural Police have registered a case.

Strike withdrawn

BHADRAVATI MARCH 1. The students of Sir M.V. Arts and Commerce College here have ended their ongoing strike following the intervention of the MLA, B.K. Sangameshwar.

The students had resorted to strike following the alleged indecent behaviour of a lecturer a few days ago. The MLA is said to have instructed lecturers to be courteous. The lecturer concerned reportedly apologised to the students.

BHADRAVATI MARCH 1. The Karnataka State Government Retired Employees' Association's taluk unit has collected Rs. 10,000 for the tsunami relief fund, the president of the taluk unit, K. Shamanna, said in a release.

The association members have contributed the amount from their pension, he said. The demand draft will be handed over to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, at a function to be held in Bangalore on Thursday, where retired employees will be felicitated.

SIRSI MARCH 1. The Haliyal Junior Magistrate First Class Judge, Shridhar Rao, sentenced four sandalwood smugglers, Jabbar Mohammed Gous Adatdar (55), Basavaraj Fakirappa Uppar (30), Ramesh Fakirappa Uppar (25), and Murugesg Kumbar (23) to three and half years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 each. The police arrested them while they were smuggling sandalwood on August 23, 2004 at Haliyal. The sub-inspector, Shivarudrappa, registered a case.
