Society deregistered

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MAR. 1. The Judicial Magistrate II, Isvarane, today directed the Registrar of Societies to deregister the "Kaavalar Podhunala Iyakkam," an organisation, which under the guise of being a society for security personnel and policemen, was indulging in unlawful activities.

Mr. Isvarane issued this direction while convicting five mento six months simple imprisonment on charges of attempting to sow disharmony among policemen and tresspassing into 5 police stations in Karaikal region of Pondicherry. "Following the Assistant Public Prosecutor, Rudrakumar's repeated request for de-recognition of the association, the court directs the Registrar of Societies," he stated in the order.

The five men — Ganesan (45), the general secretary of the society, Rajasekar, Moorthy, Munisamy alias Munian and Ambalavaanan — had entered the police stations of Karaikal town, Kottucheri, Neravi, Nedungadu and Thirunallar on August 25, 2000 and invited the policemen to attend a meeting to be held in Pondicherry.

The men had allegedly distributed pamphlets asking the policemen to stage an uprising against the Government, which was not treating them on a par with the other segments of the force.

Mr. Isvarane convicted the men under Section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (promoting disharmony or feeling of enmity), Section 447 of IPC (trespassing) and Section 3 of the Pondicherry Police Act.

He gave them 6, 3 and 6 months of simple imprisonment for the above charges, all to run concurrently, amounting to 6 months of imprisonment. Mr. Isvarane also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs. 5000 each, failing which they would be imprisoned for two more months .
