Pondicherry
By S. Nadarajan
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 1. Even as the former Home Minister of Pondicherry and dissident Congress leader, P. Kannan, and his followers are going ahead with the preparations for a rally and demonstration here on March 5 to "seek the resignation of the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, for letting down unemployed youth and also for nurturing corruption in government departments," a team of Ministers and MLAs identifying themselves as Rangasamy loyalists urged the high command to take action against Mr. Kannan. They told presspersons here today that Mr. Kannan's allegations "lacked basis and are false and fictitious." They would hold a rally on March 5 to highlight the achievements of the Government. The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, and the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, leading the team of loyalists wanted the Chief Minister to take "action against the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan (a Kannan loyalist) for "violation of oaths of office and secrecy."
Joint resolution
A joint resolution adopted by the Ministers and legislators at a meeting appealed to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to intervene immediately and take "appropriate action against Kannan" for damaging the image of the Government and the party by making "false and fictitious allegations" against Mr. Rangasamy. (Mr. Kannan had alleged that corruption and scams had gripped the Public Works Department with the connivance of the Chief Minister. He urged Mr. Rangasamy to resign owning moral responsibility.) Reading out the resolution, at a press conference today, Mr. Namassivayam said the Rangasamy Government had been praised by the high command for its transparent, impartial and honest administration and for fulfilling the ideals and dreams of the late leader, K. Kamaraj, by implementing people-friendly welfare measures. The high command should initiate appropriate action against Mr. Kannan, it added.
Massive rally
Mr. Namassivayam said that a "massive rally" would be taken out by Mr. Rangasamy's loyalists on March 5 to highlight the Government's achievements. All Ministers, MLAs and office-bearers of the Pradesh Congress Committee would participate. Mr. Elumalai read out another resolution accusing Mr. Lakshminarayanan of "violating the oaths of office and secrecy" for some time now. He said that Chief Minister should take appropriate action against Mr. Lakshminarayanan as his "activities have also caused damage to the Government." He alleged that Mr. Lakshminarayanan had misused the official vehicle by attending a meeting organised by Mr. Kannan at Villianoor on Monday.
