Nagam picks holes in budget

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 1. The TDP member, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, on Tuesday termed the budget as one that put welfare and development on the back seat.

Summing up the party's reaction in the general discussion on the budget, Mr. Reddy said nine months of the Congress rule in the State had proved that the Rajasekhara Reddy Government was good at "tall talk."

"They have spoken so much of being farmer-friendly but have they been able to stop suicides?" he asked, reminding the House that 2,537 farmers and 240 weavers had taken their lives during the Congress rule.

On the health front, Dr. Janardhan Reddy said, the situation was no better.

He said though he did not doubt the Chief Minister's capabilities, there was no point in holding several portfolios including the all-important health subject with him.

"I have seen only pro-expansion speeches in the House today," he said, raising a ripple of laughter.

The former Health Minister voiced concern over the alarming increase in HIV cases and wanted a debate in the House.
