Amendment bill introduced

HYDERABAD: A bill to amend certain provisions of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University Act, 1998, was introduced by the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, in the Assembly today. According to the statement of objects and reasons, a three-member committee, headed by the Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, had proposed certain amendments to the Act so as to secure grants from the UGC, Central government or any other organisation. The Government has accepted the recommendations and decided to amend suitably the Act. Mr. Rosaiah introduced the bill on behalf of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Open varsity exam schedule

HYDERABAD: The MBA second spell examinations of B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will be held in May. According to a BRAOU release, the final year MBA examination will be held from May 6 to 12, the second year from May 14 to 19 and the first year MBA examinations from May 22 to 27. The last date for submission of registration forms at study centres is April 6.

Naxalite surrenders

ADILABAD: Kotnak Suryabhanu alias Diwakar (20), a Gond tribal and a member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), Indervelli dalam, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, on Tuesday. The extremist was involved in the Tokiguda exchange of fire in Tiryani mandal on January 20, 2004, murder of Kasturi Potenna of Shetpalli in Pembi mandal on November 4, 2003 and A. Damodar Rao at Gangapur in Kadam mandal on February 1, 2005. The surrendered naxalite said he had joined the naxal movement in March 2003 to settle a score with a fellow villager.

Life term for killing wife

ELURU: The Eluru fast track court judge, I. Ramesh, on Tuesday sentenced Somalanka Ramakrishna Paramahamsa to undergo life imprisonment for killing his wife. According to the prosecution, Paramahamsa, a medical shop owner at Tadepalligudem, suspected the fidelity of his wife, Kalisubba Lakshmi, and murdered her in 1999.

To suppress the evidence, he dug a pit in the kitchen of his house, buried the body and built a `samadhi' on it. When asked for the whereabouts of his wife by relatives, he was trying to make them believe that she had gone overseas in pursuit of a job. However, his brother-in-law, Subramanyam, suspected a foul play and made a surprise visit to the house of Paramahamsa and found the `samadhi'.Basing on a complaint by Subramanyam, the police dismantled the `samadhi' and recovered the body.

Driver hurt as lorry overturns

CUDDAPAH: Liquor worth about Rs. 3 lakhs was destroyed when a mini lorry carrying liquor bottles overturned after hitting a tree near Chinnamachupalle in Chennur mandal on Monday night. The vehicle driver, Srinivasulu Reddy, sustained injuries and broken liquor bottles lied scattered on the road disrupting traffic movement on the Cuddapah-Mydukur road.

Students excel in online test

ELURU: Elementary schoolchildren from West Godavari district won accolades at a State-level online test on e-enabled education conducted by the State Government in Hyderabad recently. According to the District Education Officer, P. Parvathi, West Godavari district has bagged five first prizes and a third prize for its students' excellence in the online test. Five upper primary schoolchildren -- K. Bhavana from Undrajavaram, Y. Ganesh of Akiveedu, P. Naveen and K. Devi of Undi and P. Sandhya Kumari of Veeravasaram ranked first while M. Harivardhan of Peravali got the third prize.

In-charge SCR GM

HYDERABAD: Trilok Nath Perti, General Manager, South Western Railway, Hubli, on Tuesday took additional charge as the General Manager, SCR, after Stanley Babu retired on February 28. Mr. Trilok Nath worked as Chief Mechanical Engineer of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Divisional Railway Manager of Varanasi, Chief Personnel Officer of Central Railway and Chief Mechanical Engineer of Western Railway.

Appointed

HYDERABAD: T.S. Prakasa Rao, Additional Director-General, National Academy of Construction, has been appointed Ex-officio Commissioner (projects) in Irrigation and Command Area Department with immediate effect. Mr. Rao has been assigned the duties to coordinate the process of procurement of all packages of all prioritised major and medium irrigation projects, monitor the progress of works and coordinate quality control.

The Government also appointed a three-member committee with the Principal Secretary (Finance) as Chairman and the Secretaries of Law and I & CAD as member and member-convenor respectively to review the procedure for pre-award as well as post-award cases by the Land Acquisition Officer and collectors.

More water for Sagar canal

HYDERABAD: The Government has decided to increase the discharge of water into Nagarjunasagar left canal from Tuesday.

The CPI (M) member, Tammineni Veerabhadram, told reporters here that MLAs from Khammam, Guntur and Prakasam had met the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah. He said though the discharge into the left canal was 2400 cusecs till Monday, it was increased to 3000 cusecs.

Four hurt in clash

NELLORE: Four persons suffered serious injuries following a clash between two groups in Pengoludibba village of TP Gudur mandal last snight. According to information, trouble started over a section of people in the village, demanding removal of a pipeline laid for the purpose of aqua culture in the area, and the row took an ugly turn, resulting in clash. All the injured were rushed to Government hospital for treatment and the police set up a picket in the village.

7.50 lakhs to develop land

NELLORE: The authorities in Sangam mandal have initiated steps to develop an extent of 120 acres in Wood Housept area, under integrated land development scheme for which Rs. 7.50 lakhs has been sanctioned. Accordingly, 11 blocks have been selected for development.

Meanwhile, a review meeting was held here to monitor progress in welfare programmes.

Sivaratri at Srisailam

HYDERABAD: The Maha Shivaratri and brahmotsavam at Srisaila Devasthanam will be celebrated from March 5 to 11.

Special programmes such as "Nandi vahana seva", "Edurukolu utsavam" and "Kakyana mahotsavam"will be organised to mark Maha Sivaratri at the "jyotirlinga kshetram" of Srisailam on March 8, according to S.S.Prasada Reddy, Executive Officer and Joint Commissioner of the devasthanam.

Official remanded

NELLORE: Alankaram Srinivasa Raju, Divisional Accounts Officer, R & B, Kurnool, who was trapped by officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Monday was produced at the ACB Special Court here and was remanded to judicial custody till March 15.

ACB, authorities during their raids at Kurnool and Nellore, found assets disproportionate to known sources of income and brought Mr. Raju from Kurnool to Nellore to produce him in the court.

Protest against girl student's death

KARIMNAGAR: Several student organisations on Tuesday protested against the death of Bhagyalaxmi, an Intermediate second year student, under mysterious circumstances on the outskirts of the town on Monday.

Activists of the ABVP, SFI, DYFI, AISF staged a massive dharna in front of SVJC College, where she was studying, and staged a `rasta roko' on the busy Mancherial crossroads obstructing traffic for about an hour. They were demanding a CID enquiry and arrest of those responsible for the girl's death.

`Rasta roko' by BJYM

ADILABAD: The Adilabad unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Tuesday organised a `rasta roko' in front of the RTC bus stand for about half hour demanding employment for youth. The agitational programme was organised in response to the BJYM State unit's call. The BJYM activists demanded selection of eligible unemployed youth for the Rajiv Yuva Shakti self employment schemes. They alleged that the Congress party was influencing the selection of beneficiaries.

Contract workers' dharna

NALGONDA: Contract workers under the aegis of the Electricity Employees Union laid siege to the Transco superintendent engineer's office here on Tuesday, demanding that they be paid pending salaries forthwith. Earlier, the workers staged a dharna in front of the SE office, raising slogans against the Government and officers. When the SE was reluctant to meet the protestors, they laid siege to his office, according to a press release.

Heated arguments ensued between the SE and the CITU leaders, who took exception to the lukewarm response of the official. The general secretaries of the CITU and Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham, T.Veera Reddy and N.Venkataswamy, respectively, said that workers were starving due to the non-payment of salaries. The leaders demanded that minimum wages be paid to the contract workers by contractors in the form of cheques.

ZP meeting

ADILABAD: The two-day general body meeting of the Adilabad Zilla Parishad will be held on March 5 and 6 at 11 am, according to an official press release here on Tuesday.
