By Our Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM,
MARCH 1.
A woman member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) killed in an encounter in Orissa on February 19 was a native of Vijayawada, its Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee secretary, Sudhakar, said in a press release on Tuesday.
Irme, along with another party member, Dulal, were killed in a joint raid conducted by the Andhra Pradesh and Orissa police and CRPF personnel at Pujari Gudi in Kalimela block of Malkangiri district.
Irme's real name was Devi and she hailed from the Krishna Lanka area of Vijayawada. She was not a Nepali as reported in some newspapers, Mr. Sudhakar said.
For women's rights
Devi was from a poor family. She worked as a domestic help at several places and reached Visakhapatnam in search of employment. There, Devi was involved in many movements for women.
A women's organisation trained her in tailoring and by May 2003 she joined a Maoist dalam. She was known as "Tailor Kumari'' in the dalam.
She also worked with dalams in the Malkangiri area and helped build a women's revolutionary movement. Her death was big loss to the movement, Mr. Sudhakar said.
