Lalu failed to keep promises: Mayor

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, MARCH 1. The Mayor, Thottathil Ravindran, has termed the Railway Budget 2005-2006 presented by the Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, in Parliament on Saturday as disappointing to the rail users of North Kerala.

It was unfortunate that Mr. Lalu Prasad had not kept his assurances given to a delegation led by him in the second week of December, Mr. Ravindran told The Hindu today.

The Kozhikode Railway Action Committee led by Mr. Ravindran had met the Railways Minister in New Delhi and had submitted several proposals for the development of railways in North Kerala. Mr. Lalu had then given nod to several proposals, including Rs. 4 crores towards the development of the Kozhikode railway station.

The team accompanied by M.P. Veerandrankumar, P. Sathi Devi, T.K. Hamsa, Abdu Samad Samadhani and P. Karunakaran, MPs, also did a multi-media presentation focusing on the backwards of the railways in north Kerala. ``But none of the proposals submitted by us has been incorporated in the budget,'' Mr. Ravindran said.

The Railway Board chairman, R.K. Singh, and Mr. Lalu had agreed to convert the weekly super fast express between Chennai and Mangalore into a regular service, start a second train service in the same sector and commission the proposed Nizamuddin-Veli Sampark Kranti Express.

Another proposal that had been given the green signal was to extend the Venad Express from Shoranur to Kozhikode.
